Target Shooting Focus

HIGH POWER RIFLE

Just what is High Power Rifle Shooting? It's an outdoor rifle match involving different ranges, positions and time limits. A National Match Course (which is what we usually shoot here in Kodiak) consists of four separate matches.

Match one is a 200 yard slow fire and consists of 12 shots in 12 minutes from the standing position at 200 yards. The first 2 shots are sighting shots and are not scored.

Match two is a 200 yard rapid fire. It is shot from the sitting position. The shooter has 2 sighting shots in 2 minutes followed by 10 shots in 60 seconds. A reload is required.  Time starts when the targets appear. The targets are lowered at the end of 60 seconds. The shooter is required to be in the standing position until time starts, he then gets into position and if he is using a semi-auto -- shoots 2 rounds and reloads with 8 rounds. Bolt actions shoot 5 and 5. Slings are allowed in this match.

Match three is 300 yard rapid fire. It is shot from the prone position. The shooter has 2 sighting shots in 2 minutes followed by 10 shots in 70 seconds. A reload is required. Time starts when the targets appear. The targets are lowered at the end of 70 seconds. The shooter is required to

be in the standing position until time starts, he then gets into position and if he is using a semi-auto shoots 2 rounds and reloads with 8 rounds. Bolt actions shoot 5 and 5. Slings are allowed in this match.

Match four is 500 yard slow fire. It consists of 22 shots in 22 minutes from the prone position at 500 yards. The first 2 shots are sighting shots and are not scored.

Service rifles used in this sport include M1A's (the civilian version of the M14), the M1 Garand, and the AR15.  Match rifles include various bolt actions (mostly Winchesters and Remingtons) and other semi auto rifles.  The requirements are that the rifle holds at least 5 rounds in the magazine and has iron sights.

This is the competition that qualifies you to purchase an M1 Garand from the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program).  Go to http://www.odcmp.com/ to find the current prices and availability.

Shooting one highpower match will teach you more about rifle shooting than a lifetime of hunting experiences. When you shoot your first X at 500 yards the feeling of accomplishment you feel will hook you into highpower for a long time.

A lot of shooters feel intimidated by the long ranges and the feeling of being an outsider at the matches. Believe me everyone out there felt the same way there first time. Also at most matches the competitors will go out of their way to help a "new shooter". Most shooters do better than  they figured at 600 yards too, don't let it stop you.

The Kodiak Island Sportsman's Association

holds HP Rifle matches monthly so come on out and give it a try.

On Saturdays, KISA will be holding 500 yard HP Rifle Shooting match.  Registration is from 9:30 AM with firing beginning at 10:00 AM.
We fire two classes of rifles, service rifles are AR15's, M1 Garand, and M1A.  Match rifles are any centerfire rifles with iron sights that hold at least 5 rounds in the magazine.
This is a 80 shot match with 8 sighting shots.  The attached brochure discusses the positions and time limits.
We do have rifles available to use if you need to borrow one.  Please call 942-7737 if you want to use one of our rifles so we make sure to bring it to the match.
This match is open to all shooters, both new and experienced.  You need no prior experience to shoot in this match.  (all of us had to shoot in their first match)
Firing in this match will qualify you to purchase a M1 Garand from the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program).  Their Website is www.odcmp.com/ .
The weather at the Salonie Creek Rifle Range can be completely different from town.  Call 942-7737 Sunday mornings for an update.

Here are some photos of shooters prepping and in action.  The last picture is of me in the prone position.  Note the glare of the sun off of my "buzz" haircut:

This was not a good day for me.  I came in 4th out of 4.  Someone mentioned that you shouldn't drink coffee prior to these matches.  I was sort of thinking that may have been my problem until much later when I thought about what happened.

My best round was the first one, which is standing and shooting a slow fire round.  That is 10 rounds in 10 minutes.  You can't use a sling, so this is normally the hardest round to get a good score.  I shot second best and it was the only "good" round I shot.  What did I do different?  I had my iPod on with a Haydn mass playing softly while I shot.  I think it just relaxed me.  Who knows?  We all know what excuses are like.  Anyway, it was fun.

We got through early and all the married guys were afraid to go home.  They would probably get numerous chores to perform, so we decided to put up the 500 yard targets and just get a feel for what shooting at that distance is like.  We have to drive back to the range house where the big targets are kept:

6.jpg
7.jpg

The targets are then mounted in a carrier:

8.jpg

Two of us operate the carrier (we only used one target) while the other two shot.  We have radios for communication.  When we have the carrier all set, we run the target up above the berm where the shooter can see it and shoot at it:

9.jpg

Here is what it looks like to us in the pits:

10.jpg

When a shooter hits the target, we mark the hit with a marker.  If the hit is in the black, the marker is white.  If the hit is in the white, the marker is black.  The spindle that goes through the center of the marker fits in the hole the bullet makes.  This way, the shooter can look through his/her spotting scope and see exactly where they hit the target.  This allows them to make adjustments if necessary.

Here is an example of one of Karl's hits at 500 yards

Thanks Al
